Library Policy

Successful school library policies succinctly define the visions, role, aims and objectives of the school library for the whole school community and are underpinned by good practice.

A good library policy should also make reference to:-

·        the library’s status as a learning environment in the school and it’s role in raising achievement
·        the relationship with the school’s overall aims as defined in the School Improvement Plan
·        links to other school polices and support for the curriculum/ local /national initiatives

The policy should therefore include the following :-

1.  Mission statement for the library embracing ideals and visions

2. Aims
There are two main aims based around the function of a library environment ie
Ø     To develop and foster a love reading
Ø     To develop and enhance independent learning skills

3. Objectives

Relating to all aspects of library provision
·        accommodation
·        staffing
·        funding
·        learning resources
·        organization and management

Support for teaching and learning
·        Pupil Usage
·        Developing and supporting independent learning
·        Promoting reading for enjoyment

Monitoring and evaluation
·        How this will be undertaken

4. External support
·        Schools Library Service
·        Public Library Service
·        Other advisory support – local and or national

5. A Library Improvement Plan
A Library Improvement Plan with clear outcomes and targets should be part of the School Improvement plan and seek to support it’s overall aims as well as individual needs of the developing library.

NB The policy should be revised regularly alongside other school plans and form part of the school cycle of reviews.
