Primary School Library Guidelines

Every pupil/student is entitled to effective school library provision. There is a clear link between the quality of a school's library and the general well-being of the pupils, their literacy levels etc.etc.

A lively, welcoming and well resourced school library is essential. It gives pupils broad and positive experiences of books, computers and other media. The library is not just a space but a living organism , continually evolving to respond to the learning and teaching needs of the school, an expression of the ethos and values of the school community. It is also an effective and economical shared resource. The school library should be a centre for learning and literacy development , a place where pupils, surrounded by books can enjoy and respond to the stimulating environment . IT is an integral part of this learning environment

Effective library provision is equitable and inclusive. Through the school library, all pupils have access to reading for pleasure as well as learning resources

The school library’s role is to help create confident, enthusiastic readers and to engage children in life long learning

The challenge for libraries in primary schools is to create a reading ethos around the school so children move on to secondary education with a real enthusiasm for reading.
